With a Holy Land Like This World Has, Who Needs Hell?

When will peace finally come to that battlefield of religion they call the Holy Land?  When will that day finally come?  When the last Muslim and the last Jew have killed each other in the ruins of Jerusalem?   Would Likud finally be satisfied?  Would Hamas finally be satisfied?

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict has multiple causes, there are legitimate grievances on both sides, but there are also demagogues on both sides, fanatics on both sides, cynical exploiters of religion on both sides, killers of children on both sides.  That vicious cycle of violence has to be stopped, the crisis has to be resolved.  Blockading Gaza won't resolve it, blockading Gaza is making it worse.

Politicians will never bring peace to this world, they're all Netanyahus, they're all Palins, they're all Obamas dancing on the puppet strings of their corporate masters.  Not one of them is worth a damn. People like you and me will have to be the peacemakers. We can be, and we'll have to be. Believing we can end the killing isn't an illusion.  Believing we can't is the illusion.

Roger Waters knows who the peacemakers will be, he knows what must be overcome and who will overcome it . . .

Rusty1776 :: With a Holy Land Like This World Has, Who Needs Hell?
We're surrounded by prison walls.  Prison walls of racism and injustice, prison walls of war, prison walls of politics and propaganda and corporate profit and deceit.  But we can tear down those prison walls.  With the truth.  I see more truth here in one day than I see in the corporate media in a year. Keep telling it, and it will set us free.

People don't have to go looking for the truth, it's within them, it's all around them, all they have to do is see it.  And then tell it. People can do that, they learned how to talk long ago.  But too many of them don't listen.  Well it's time to start listening.  They can start by listening to this . . .

Peace is the truth and the truth is peace.

Justice is the truth and the truth is justice.

Love is the truth and the truth is love.

Tell that to your "leaders".  Tell them that, wherever you live.  Tell it in English on the streets of Washington, tell it in Hebrew on the streets of Tel Aviv, tell it in Arabic on the streets of Cairo and Damascus and Riyadh.  In every language of every land from the steppes of Asia to the Nile Valley, from Beijing to Islamabad, from St. Petersburg to Johannesburg and everywhere in between.

We can tear down those prison walls with the truth, we can reject the lies our "leaders" tell us, we can erase the borders that divide us, we can tell the generals to STFU and throw every one of their weapons of war into the sea.  We can tell the politicians who like wars so much to go fight them, we can tell the weapons makers to go fight them, we can tell the mullahs and rabbis and evangelists to go fight them.

They can take Blitzer and O'Reilly and Hannity and Beck along for that last ride to the last battlefield, they can take all the flag wavers whose boots have never been on the ground along for that last crusade.  When they run out of bullets, they can throw their Bibles and Qu'rans and Torahs at each other.  Televise it.  Televise it live so everyone can see what madness on the faces of the damned looks like.

If the politicians and pundits and preachers and propaganda peddlers were the ones who had to do the fighting and dying, we'd see peace in a hurry, we'd see it in a heartbeat.  They're the terrorists, they're the lethal threat to this world's survival, the members of Hamas and Hezbollah they demonize with with every breath they take are choirboys compared to them.  That's the truth that needs to be told, that's the truth we all have to tell, that's the truth that will set us free, that's the truth as I see it on this 10th day of June in the 10th year of what will be humanity's final century if the truth isn't told.

Tear down those prison walls. (12.00 / 4)

Amen, my brother (12.00 / 3)
in any language there may be.

Here's another way of saying it:

Mitakye Oyasin, we are all related....

This is beautiful and inspiring and a dose of exactly what I needed, when my faith has become weak. It made me feel stronger again.

It's difficult for me (12.00 / 2)
to equate the crimes of Israel and Hamas. I understand one must do that, ie The Goldstone Report as politically expedient and technically accurate a la the legal definition of "war crime", but I just can't.

While true both sides have killed innocents, IMO, the numbers and egregious brutality clearly leans in Israels favor when looking from the Scales of Justice.

Not all war crimes are created equal.

What would Hamas do if they were the regional superpower instead of Israel? (0.00 / 0)
I think it's pretty clear what they'd do.  They haven't matched Israel's level of brutality because they aren't capable of it, if they were, they'd match it and then surpass it.

[ Parent ]
I disagree - (6.00 / 1)
Hamas is like the Taliban, they are nationalist forces of liberation from foreign occupation. They are religious extremists, yes, but within that extremism is a code of honor. Brutal, to be sure, not lawless.

Can you honestly say that about Israel?

Now perhaps if Islamic Extremism was the regional power, then things like the overthrow of client regimes would certainly brutally happen. Sharia law would ensue. Tolerance is not a watchword, as it is say with Lebanon's Hizzbolah, but I don't understand where your generalization of brutality comes from re Hamas.

Islamic extremism comes in two flavors Shia and Sunni, like a very bad and dysfunctional family Thanksgiving dinner. Unity against the Oppressor, the West, is unlikely because of the religious differences between the two groups and the hatred engendered. The Sunni and Shia make the Hatfields and McCoys look like a hippie love fest.

If you're saying if Hamas had the power they'd treat the Israelis the same way Israel treats Palestine, okay, I get that.

But your idea is a completely unrealistic hypothesis while Israel is the reality.

hmm (12.00 / 1)
Impossible comparison.

Power corrupts -- however it is true that extremism is the result of oppression and unhappiness, the feeling of powerlessness.

I submit that were Palestine strong and had never been oppressed, Hamas & sharia would never have been a factor.

However, now that they have been fucked for 50 year, holy shit, they would retaliate...

Better to not htink in these terms, better to think of what would have happened if the refugees from WWII had chosen to be brothers and create a strong bi-religious state, how affluent they all would be.

And then think of how to make that happen...

We'll see what the reality is when Turkish and/or Iranian warships escort aid ships (6.00 / 1)
to break the Gaza blockade.  If the Israelis use military force at sea again, they'll trigger a military response at sea from Turkey and/or Iran. The confrontation would escalate.  Shia and Sunni Muslim nations would set their differences aside and unite against their common enemy Israel, just like the capitalist West and communist Russia set their differences aside and united against their common enemy Nazi Germany.

Hamas has called for the liberation of all of Palestine, which would require the destruction of Israel.  Muslim nations have tried to do that four times in four major regional wars.  I think it's completely unrealistic to ignore that reality.  The Israelis are certainly not going to ignore it, they've been one battlefield defeat away from annihilation more than once.

The whole Middle East is a powder keg, and the Israelis aren't the only ones with lit matches in their hands.

Hey Rusty - (9.33 / 3)
While I disagree with your assessment on this and your interpretation of history, I still believe you're one of the best damned writers around and consider you a must read.

peace.

[ Parent ]
Agreed... (11.00 / 2)
I still believe you're one of the best damned writers around and consider you a must read.

The same goes for you, too. gottlieb.
