My rule of thumb is not to bring the cops into anyone's life unless absolutely necessary. But being stalked and threatened is really unsettling.

Its funny, in talking to a cop who is my friend out here (a former neighbor), and fairly sane, his advice was drop-first, call-second if I had trouble; me being a woman and all. He knew Mike, his kids go to school with mine.

Big dogs and guns are a perk, but they asked me if I had any large friends who could stay with me.  When I answered my husband had worked for a couple bad-ass biker gangs, they laughed and said, "Now there's a deterrent to crime if I ever heard one. Use them if you need to."

I really wanted to discuss Occupy with him. Its not really an issue out here - but I wanted to get their thoughts on it.  But I figured I needed the good rapport with them, and didn't want to lose it.  He knows I'm a lefty.

So, am I sell-out for not trying to bring them on board?  Am I a hypocrite for saying "fuck the pigs" then considering using them?  I mean I did vote for their millage, and pay my taxes so I guess its owed me.

For the moment, I have not formally employed them.  But I did have a nice long talk with them and got good advice.  We are logging every time I am followed, every lie, every attempt to follow my cyber trail.

The open thread is open, and the Question of the Day is:

"How many times have you actually called the cops, and how did it work out for you?"

Mostly for accidents (0.00 / 0)
I have witnessed.  Once after an attempted rape.  Once when the gun club's alarm went off at Napier.  Once when my husband was drunk and beating me up when we were very young.  Once when he died.

Thats the extent of my cop-interaction, unless you want to talk about the times I partied with them!

Oh, now THOSE are some stories I could tell!!!!

Cops have real work to do, too. (17.00 / 1)
However, finding a good cop is a chancy operation. So many of them are in it for the dominance factor. It's what gets them off. I have watched it, up close and personal. A relatively normal human being suddenly swells up and becomes The  Armed And Final Authority when truly challenged on almost any level.

Do Not Mess With Me. I Am Armed And Mortally Dangerous. I Have A License To Kill And I Can Get Away With It. Resistance Is Futile.

Bet on it.

I have "called the cops" only once...after a serious auto accident. They did a good job. Other than that I have always taken care of my own business. I have threatened to call the cops only once also. Two days ago. Long story short, I had someone in my house who I wanted to leave and he did not want to go. A sad story, a down-and-out musician with mental and emotional problems that are beyond my level of available help. I tried for a month...let him stay with me, fed him, tried help him get his act together, get social services aid and so on...but he was just jiving me and everybody else, including himself. I wanted him out but I didn't want to have to hurt him physically, so I told him that if he didn't leave 911 was my next option. He left. I woulda called them, too.

You're being stalked? Not a good cop thing unless it's almost too late and he/she is on you physically. Otherwise it's too nebulous. I have a good cop friend...a country detective, a living character out of a great novel or film. Want me to talk to him? He'll have some ideas, I think. He's seen it all. Twice. If you do, email me and tell me more.

Thanks dear. (0.00 / 0)
I think I may have handled it.

I did the Diane thing, cry first, scared second, pissed third.

I think I made it clear I could and would handle it myself and he seems to have backed off.

I think my situation is much the same as yours.  Decent person, either off his meds, or in the beginnings of dementia or something.

Still? Totally disconcerting for someone newly alone....

Good. I hope it's over. (0.00 / 0)
Stalking? It's always totally disconcerting. I have had a couple of jealous ex-lovers who thought that I had stepped in and somehow "stolen" their ladies...I hadn't in either case...make mortal threats to me over the phone. If I had been able to keep three bodyguards and an attack dog with me 24/7 I still would have been jumpy for weeks. Hard to relax, to say the least. The safety bubble in which we all...mistakenly or otherwise...think that we live is easily punctured and then there we are, aren't we? Surrounded by the 360 degree possibility of sudden threat.

Not a good feeling.

I can relate.

Yep, yep (0.00 / 0)
I guess once you've been sexually assaulted (2 attempted rapes in my case) that safety bubble never fully recovers, and you are almost always VERY aware of your circumstances.

It seems my message got across.  Its been clear for a few days now, no harassment.

Thanks Art :)
